The Simple Name Change Checklist
1. The first step in the process is to make sure that your signed marriage license is mailed ASAP so you get your marriage certificate sooner than later. No name changing can be done without this lovely document.
2. Make sure to change your name on your bank account and order new checks. If you plan on having a joint bank account, now is a great time to set that up.
3. Update any credit cards, stocks, mortgages, leases, IRAs, records at your current place of employment.
4. Change your name on your Social Security card (you’ll need your marriage certificate). SocialSecurity.gov.
5. Change your ID (you’ll need your marriage certificate and possibly your new SS card).
6. If you’re a traveler, update your passport.
7. Update your voter registration. DeclareYourself.org
8. Update all bills, and any subscriptions.
This may seem like a lot, but once it’s done, it’s done!
